Confronting the Hidden Curriculum in Social Work

Abstract

The promise of education, whether in K-12 classrooms or through professional training, was once centered on helping people to learn to think critically, engage ethically, and participate meaningfully in society. Over time, that focus appears to have shifted, with education and training now tied to productivity, economic outcomes, and measurable performance.  My journey, from an undiagnosed ADHD child trying to survive a rigid school system, to a social worker confronting institutional pressures, and eventually to an educator facing scripted curriculum mandates, revealed a pattern I could no longer ignore. Systems that reward conformity while quietly discouraging authenticity, advocacy, and genuine human connection.
