The Curriculum of Gravity
How Teachers Can Harness Struggle
Keywords:
curriculum, adversity, determination, resilience, JourneyAbstract
This essay argues that the primary purpose of education is to equip individuals with the tools to define and "carve" their own meaningful existence out of their circumstances. Drawing on personal experiences of overcoming adversity, this piece seeks to critique contemporary education practices. The piece suggests that current systems often prioritize narrow definitions of success and academic achievement (being "good at school") over fostering the resilience, broad self-definition, and critical self-examination necessary for a fulfilling human experience. This is a challenge to teachers to move beyond mere justifications of utility and instead prioritize teaching students how to rise above challenges and find their inner "mettle."
