Abstract

This reflection explores the transformative journey of my study abroad experience in Belize, where I navigated the intersection of personal growth, academic discovery, and cultural immersion. As a mature student among predominantly younger peers, I grappled with preconceived notions about age and capability, ultimately embracing my life experiences as valuable assets. The trip offered hands-on learning opportunities, such as hikes through rainforests and snorkeling along the Belize Barrier Reef, which challenged me physically and intellectually. Beyond personal growth, the experience fostered dialogue about global and local issues, such as food insecurity, access to clean water, and sustainable living, drawing parallels to challenges within the U.S. Through these shared experiences and reflections, I deepened my commitment to lifelong learning, broadened my perspective on global citizenship, and affirmed the importance of diverse voices in collaborative educational settings.
