Confronting the Question of Solipsism
Personal Essay as a Form of Scholarly Writing
Keywords:
life-writingAbstract
This personal essay examines several qualities that contribute to the scholarly nature of the genre. Elements of discourse (distance between writer and audience; abstraction of topic) are offered as a framework for considering the educative intent of an essay—a key hallmark of scholarly personal writing. Additional hallmarks of life-writing (e.g., curiosity, transparency of thinking, incorporation of relevant literature) are suggested as safeguards against solipsism. The essay concludes with a brief consideration of the value of such a personal form of knowledge.
